Just the beginning!

Please, meet our three new friends for the week...

We have the old version of this one

The Edger                          The Drum Sander                       The Belt Sander

For the most part, the five of us are getting along quite well. The edger, we only had for one day, but we'll be coming back for it in a few more days. The drum sander runs for at least eight hours a day, we have it for only a week. That wonderful drum sander is grinding a wretched, screaming, scratching noise deep into my head. We also haven't had any major accidents with the drum sander, which is common from what we hear. You can make a pretty serious and unfixable dip in the wood floor if you're not careful. Lastly, our belt sander! Ours is an older version than the one we have shown, boy does that thing sand! I love it!

All-in-all this sanding the floors project has been really easy. It's sort of like vacuuming your floors but going over them like 8 times with different size grits to make it really nice and smooth. Oh, but the noise... it's going to make me go crazy soon.

We only have the big drum sander for a week so we're feverishly sanding away all the floors and praying that none of the cats decide to barf on the open wood floors. As of right now, I'm listening to Rick go through our master bedroom on the final sanding at 150 grit. Tomorrow we will be dragging all the guest bedroom furniture out into the master bedroom to work on those floors. Then we will be done with the first and second floor. Depending on how ambitious we are we may head up to the third floor. But I'm thinking not. The third floor with the exception to Rick's office is really low in the priority list for us. Although I would really love to have all this dust kicked into the air just once this week and never again. Thank God we can close off the third floor and hopefully keep the dust up there when the time comes.

After we're all done sanding we will vacuum the day lights out of everything, then we will go over the floors with a water only damp mop to "pop" the grain of the wood to prep it to accept the stain more readily. Then we lay down the stain and finish with a polyurethane top coat to protect it.

(Tiny nerd moment: I totally spelled polyurethane without trying over and over again to get the red line to go away, or giving into spell checking it! 25 years in to life, I might finally be figuring out this whole spelling thing)

Okay! Enough chatting! Here are some pictures of what our house has been going through this week!

So this is our very nasty dinning room floor.
I guess a few decades ago it was cool to glue
your carpet onto the floor.
NOT!
 Hey Dad! Keep it up!
Here's nearly done with the dinning room floor
sanding with the super big grit (24 grit) That just
got the fuzz off the floor and clogged up a lot of our sand
paper with the glue. We eventually found ourselves
scraping off the glue with some super gnarly skin
burning adhesive remover. Then we went back through
the floors again, and again, and again!
 Hey Carlos!
We made it through the whole first floor!
But some how, through this process the boys managed
to leave the back door open and lose my cat Rambo.
He's been missing since Sunday late morning.
All I can do is hope he will show up, or is at least
having a blast being an outside cat.
 Pre-edger entry way!
 Holy cow!
Every day since we started sanding I can not
believe my eyes! It's amazing how great the
wood looks. Before the floors were so dark,
dirty and banged up and worn out and now
they're this awesome clean bright fresh start!
Here is a great example of how much of a difference
the sanding does to the floor! This is in our master
bedroom. That scary wall in the back is where a double
sink vanity, two mirrors and a big hanging chunk of wall
to hold the florescent light was.  The nasty wall to the right
of the sander is where the previous owners built in a huge
three door closet that extended out to the middle of the
room.

In other news around the house....
My dad Retired! YAHOO! 40 years at the same job!
Happy retirement dad!

We acquired a REAL skeleton from one of Rick's
work friends! I like to all him Arthur.

MISSING!
Rambo went missing this Sunday. If you know where
I live and are around the neighborhood please keep an
eye out for this guy! He's of healthy cat weight, has a
slightly girlish meow, has really high anxiety so he may
be hiding in a bush or somewhere. He walks sort of bow
legged and is actually very friendly. He has no collar and
is not chipped. He's an inside only cat with the exception
to hanging out on our second floor balcony. If anyone finds
him I promise a very handsome cash reward.
Come home Rambo!
